Former New York City Mayor; Oval Office Contender by Tania Mitrione
2008 will be the year when we elect a new President of the United States of America. A prestigious and stressful position to take and one that comes with much responsibility. New York City’s former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is one who is willing to take on the race to become America’s next President and is comfortable with his ability to take on such a position. Mr. Giuliani has been in media headlines both during and after his stay in office as New York City’s Mayor and will always be remembered and praised for his strong efforts to help an amazing city through both the best and worst of times. Currently as a Republican Candidate in the Presidential race Mr. Giuliani takes the lead as the favorite in countless polls taken all over the U.S. Should Mr. Giuliani win the Presidential election he would be the very first Italian-American President in the history of the United States. He would also be the first Catholic President since John F. Kennedy. What does this say about the future of the nation? I believe it says that change is coming. Although it may take a while before we see changes that would never have been thought of as possible, the simple fact that Mr. Giuliani is now the favorite among all the Presidential hopefuls is already a large leap in itself as far as change goes in this country. Italian-Americans everywhere from New York to California and from all generations will be able to feel a sense of pride in that one of their own has succeeded where no one else has before; giving a sense of comfort to all the people of Italian decent in this nation and around the world. Italian-Americans have made their mark all over American history over the last 200 years. Some people may be skeptical about Mr. Giuliani’s ability to “run the country” only having experience as a Mayor; however his experience in being New York City’s Mayor and his stands on being a Republican may win over enough votes to grab him the seat in the infamous Oval Office. Having the experience of leading one of America’s most colorful and diverse cities; taking it through ridding it of much crime and seeing the city through its darkest days of the tragedy of 9/11 is definitely an advantage for Mr. Giuliani and when it comes time for the Presidential debates to occur, his dealings as Former Mayor and Republican for the people should surely assist him in convincing the people who may have doubts about his abilities to be a strong and influential leader. For now we can only watch as the candidates race towards the election and hope that the future of the United States and its people will be put into good hands.
